Musandam, Sultanate of Oman - 13 November 2025
The Oman 3165 expedition officially launched today in Musandam under the patronage of His Excellency Ibrahim bin Said Al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam, in the presence of officials from various governmental authorities.
This first-of-its-kind expedition in the region highlights Oman’s national efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, exploring the country’s coastline in a sustainable maritime journey powered solely by paddling and currents, without any carbon emissions. Captain Khalil bin Ali Al Hooti, Vice President of Marine at Asyad Shipping, said: “The Oman 3165 expedition represents the intersection of Oman’s maritime heritage with the nation’s vision for a sustainable future and net-zero goals. For Asyad, it reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible operations and enabling future generations to preserve our seas and natural resources.
The official launch in Musandam follows the international announcement of the expedition at the Royal Geographical Society in London in September, under the patronage of the Sultanate of Oman’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom. The announcement coincided with World Maritime Day, under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Commitment, Our Opportunity”. This event marks the official start of the expedition, which will navigate Oman’s coastline from Musandam to Dhofar during the period from November 2025 to February 2026.
The expedition, led by the renowned explorer, Mark Evans, represents a unique experience that combines maritime heritage with sustainable techniques to support scientific research and environmental awareness.
The journey aims to document Oman's marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems in collaboration with academic and scientific institutions, producing educational and awareness content for global students and scientists through digital platforms, podcasts, and educational programs. This initiative transforms Oman's coastline into an open educational platform, highlighting the nation's leadership in environmental protection and climate action.
The Oman 3165 expedition narrates a national story connecting land and sea across past and future, bringing Oman to the world and reinforcing its position as a leading destination for sustainability and environmental innovation.
